United Kingdom: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)   |   UK2024-0035
Following the departure of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU) in 2021 there was optimism that the UK would adopt a more scientific and proportionate approach to the regulation of genetically engineered (GE) and genetic technology products. To date, the biotechnology approval process in the UK has lagged behind the EU. No new GE authorizations have been approved or consultations on new GE crops have been announced since the 2023 Biotech Annual report. Additionally, even though the Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act received Royal Assent in March 2023, implementing legislation is still required for it to take effect.
