The estimated area planted to Genetically Engineered (GE) crops in Canada was down 2 percent in 2018, due primarily to lower soybean area in the prairie provinces. Since the 2017 biotechnology annual, Health Canada has approved new GE canola, apple, rice and sugarcane varieties for food, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency has approved the first two for unconfined release into the environment.
