China: Potatoes and Potato Products Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

China’s MY2016/17 fresh potato production is forecast to increase three percent to 100 million metric tons (MMT) due to an expansion of potato acreage and normal weather conditions in major producing areas. China’s MY2016/17 FFF production is forecast to increase 9 percent at 230,000 MT, driven by increasing domestic demand from quick serve restaurants and convenience stores. Post forecasts China’s MY2016/17 FFF imports at 160,000 MT, about a 5 percent increase driven by growing domestic demand. The United States continues to dominate China’s FFF import market. In February 2016, the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) released its “Suggestions for Promoting the Development of the Potato Industry” which sets very ambitious goals for potato area expansion and production.
