With almost 84 million of the world’s wealthiest consumers, Germany is the largest market for food and agricultural products in the European Union. The German market offers good opportunities for U.S. exporters of consumer-oriented food and agriculture products, particularly nuts, fish and seafood products, dried fruits, bakery products, and pulses.

Germany: US Hops Dominate the German Import Market

Germany – currently the world’s largest hop producer – continues to rely heavily on U.S. hop imports, which reached 68.3 million USD in 2024, representing 41 percent of total German hop imports. German breweries, especially in the growing craft and specialty segment, depend on U.S. high-alpha and aromatic varieties as well as hop extracts not widely available domestically.
Genetically-engineered (GE) products are highly politicized in Germany. Despite an openness to innovation, agricultural biotechnology faces significant challenges in Germany due to mixed societal and governmental attitudes.
