  |   Trade Spotlight

In fiscal year (FY) 2024, U.S. non-alcoholic beverage (excluding juices1) exports to the world increased to $2.9 billion, up 2 percent from the previous year. Non-alcoholic beverages make up 3 percent of U.S. consumer-oriented and processed food exports. Export growth surged during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, with annual growth rates ranging from 4 to 9 percent. A primary driver of this growth is the increasing demand for ready-to-drink beverages and non-alcoholic alternatives. The category includes roasted coffee, flavored water products, instant and herbal teas, carbonated soft drinks, and non-alcoholic beer.

The top markets for non-alcoholic beverages are Canada ($1.5 billion), Mexico ($243 million), the Republic of Korea (South Korea) ($147 million), the European Union ($108 million), and Vietnam ($93 million). Between FY 2021 and 2024, exports to Canada and Mexico experienced steady growth with average annual growth rates of 6 and 8 percent, respectively. The fastest-growing markets for U.S. non-alcoholic exports are Saudi Arabia (33 percent2), the Bahamas (22 percent), Chile (21 percent), and the United Arab Emirates (9 percent). With evolving consumer preferences, especially increased demand for roasted coffee in Asia3, U.S. exporters will continue to benefit from strong opportunities in both top and emerging markets around the world.

The Role of BICO Classifications

Bulk, Intermediate, and Consumer-Oriented (BICO) goods are the primary classification for agricultural commodities. To better understand trends in agricultural trade, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) organizes thousands of Harmonized Tariff System codes related to agriculture into BICO groupings based on the level of processing and typical end-use.
U.S. 2024 calendar year agricultural exports totaled $176.0 billion, marking a 1-percent increase ($1.8 billion) from the previous year and securing the third-largest total recorded.
