Uzbekistan: Cotton and Products Update

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Uzbek cotton production is estimated at about 4.08 million bales (890,000 MT) for MY2016/17. A warmer than usual winter, lack of water, pest problems and replanting all caused a lower than expected crop. The Uzbekistan government continues to take steps to increase cotton quality by improving seed quality along with farming and ginning practices. Domestic cotton consumption is increasing year by year with new textile investments. Accordingly, MY 2016 domestic cotton consumption is forecast at 1.8 million bales (400,000 MT). Cotton exports during the year are expected to be nearly 2.4 million bales (520,000 MT). Bangladesh and China continue to be the main export markets for Uzbek cotton.
