Taiwan: Agricultural Biotechnology Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

Since the previous report, Taiwan has granted approval for imports of genetically engineered (GE) products for processing, food, and feed use. However, Taiwan has still never permitted GE crops or animals for domestic production. In 2019, Taiwan imported over $1.1 billion of U.S. GE crops, accounting for 31 percent of total U.S. agricultural exports to the island. Taiwan authorities are currently debating how to manage innovative breeding techniques but do not yet have a public draft or policy for the products of these technologies. However, Taiwan is making incremental progress in regulating products of microbial biotechnology.
