This report is designed to be an introduction to the political, economic, and trade situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The DRC is the second largest country in Africa and boasts one of the largest population on the continent.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) offers significant growth potential for U.S. food and beverage exporters, driven by its large population and increasing urbanization, U.S. agricultural and related product exports to the DRC are rising, with strong demand for wheat, poultry, vegetable oil, and rice.

Top U.S. agricultural exports to the Republic of Ireland include soybean meal, distillers grains, forestry products, racehorses, and distilled spirits. In 2023, U.S. agricultural and related exports totaled $669 million, a 5 percent increase over 2022.

Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans, are a legume full of protein, fiber, complex carbohydrates, and are relatively low in calories. Chickpeas are used in many Indian and Mediterranean dishes. Australia, India, and Canada are the top three chickpea exporters accounting for more than 40 percent of the world’s exports in 2022. Pakistan is the largest importer, followed by the European Union, Bangladesh, and Turkey.
