On April 14, 2023, the first outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in pigs in Poland in 2023 was announced. It is the first outbreak since September 2022, detected on a small backyard farm in Dolnoslaskie (Lower Silesia) province.
The Canadian cattle herd will continue to contract in 2023. With a smaller cow herd and reductions in heifer retention the 2023 calf crop is expected to be smaller relative to 2022. FAS Manila estimates beef production to increase slightly to185,000 MT for 2023 because of efforts of commercial farms to increase production. Beef imports are expected to increase slightly to 260,000 MT in line with population growth.
