In January 2021, Peru extended the previous ten-year biotechnology moratorium for another fifteen years. Like the previous moratorium, Peru has yet to notify the measure to the World Trade Organization. In general, biotechnology remains misunderstood by the public.. However, Peru carries out research at academic level institutions as part of its science, technology, and innovation plan. In 2024, the Ministry of Agriculture attempted to remove (without success) the moratorium on specific genetic engineering (GE) crops.
