Panama has approved the import of genetically modified (GM) corn seeds for local production, and has conducted field trials for GM mosquitoes and salmon. Two other products are pending approval: GM rice for human consumption and genetically engineered (GE) flies for screwworm research. The Government Administration has the challenge to approve those products along with GE salmon for commercialization and establishing implementing regulations for the laws on biosafety and biotechnology. However, Biotechnology development in Panama is not one of their priorities.
