New Zealand: Livestock and Products Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)

New Zealand total cattle numbers continue to increase and are forecast to reach 10.38 million head by 2018, up by 1.2 percent from 10.26 million head in 2017. However on the export front, volumes are forecast to be relatively stable at 566,000 MT carcass weight equivalents in 2017 and 568,000 MT carcass weight equivalents in 2018. Japan’s 50 percent safeguard tariff on beef imports from August, 2017, to March, 2018, is likely to disrupt trade to this market and will overshadow New Zealand’s recent trade policy wins including its beef and sheepmeat market access agreement with Iran and its trial market access for chilled beef and sheepmeat into China.
