International tourism is one of the most dynamic components of El Salvador’s economy, and has been a cornerstone of El Salvador’s hotel and restaurant industries. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the tourism sector in 2020. Hotels estimate losses at over $440 million, and reports indicate that at least 235 restaurants (30% of the formal sector) have closed across the country.
