Ecuador: Ecuador, European Union Agriculture Trade One Year into Trade Agreement

On January 1, 2017, Ecuador’s entry into the European Union’s Andean Multiparty Trade Agreement took effect. One year into implementation, Ecuador maintains a large surplus of $2.6 billion over the European Union’s agricultural exports. At the same time, the competitive advantage granted to the European Union is becoming evident as it begins to capture more of the market. The European Union’s agricultural exports grew about 22 percent in 2017 to an estimated $146 million.
