Milk production in Australia in 2022 is forecast to decrease by over four percent to 8.6 million metric tons (MMT). Despite generally good production conditions for 2022, the slump in milk production is largely due farmers continuing to exit the dairy industry through farm sales and some dairy farms partially or fully transitioning to less labor-intensive beef cattle production.

Another big production year for Australian grains is forecast in marketing year (MY) 2021/22 after a strong drought-recovery year in MY 2020/21.

Australia’s sugar production is forecast to increase to 4.4 million metric tons (MMT) in marketing year (MY) 2021/22, from an estimated 4.335 MMT in MY 2020/21.

Australian oilseed production is expected to be strong again in marketing year (MY) 2021/22, continuing the recovery that started in MY 2020/21 following two years of extreme drought.

Cotton production in Australia is set to climb to 3.9 million bales in marketing year (MY) 2021/22, 50 percent higher than the estimated MY 2020/21 result and 15 percent above the previous 10-year average.
