Turkey has a young population of 84 million people fueling consumption of consumer-oriented agricultural products. The country is in a Customs Union with the EU and is the 20th largest economy in the world and the 7th largest agricultural producer.

Since Burma initiated a series of political and economic reforms in 2011, U.S. agricultural exports have grown over 80-fold, reaching a record $174 million in 2019 and $167 million in 2020 despite the COVID-19 situation.

Post forecasts higher Burmese rice exports in December. This forecast anticipates active demand from Africa, China, and EU countries during the new crop harvest and the reopening of Burma-China border gates.

In MY 2021/22, the orange yield is forecast to increase 40 percent to 1.82 million metric tons (MMT) due to favorable rainy weather conditions in March and April 2021. The input costs for items such as fertilizer, fuel, and pesticides are still considered too high while farm gate prices are too low to compensate for the high production costs.

On November 9, Burma published new negative import lists that indicate the products required to have import licenses with notification 18/2021, which included apples, grapes, oranges, pears and butter and milk products.

The Turkish cotton crop for Marketing Year (MY) 2021/22 is forecast at 450,000 hectares and 825,000 metric tons (MT; 3.79 million bales). Cotton consumption is expected to be 1,850,000 MT (8.50 million bales) for the same MY.

There are no significant developments to convey since the previous report from October 2020. Although Burma (also called Myanmar) does not yet have a comprehensive biosafety legislation, the final version of the National Biosafety Framework and Biosafety Guidelines are completed and pending approval.

Turkey published its Biosafety Law and implementing regulations in 2010. This legislation has continued to disrupt trade and Turkey’s domestic agriculture and food sectors.
