Thailand’s newly proposed National Energy Plan (NEP) lowered the on-road biofuel consumption target to reflect the lower mandated blend rate for biodiesel and set a target for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from 2026.
FAS New Delhi expects India’s ethanol production for 2024 to reach 6.35 billion liters (BL), less than a 1 percent change down from last year due to projected decline in sugarcane production and depleting rice grain storage.
The 2023 U.S. Agricultural Export Yearbook provides a statistical summary of U.S. agricultural commodity exports to the world during the 2023 calendar year.
India is the world’s most populous country and boasts one of the fastest growing economies in the world. As Indian households continue to reach higher levels of consumer spending, imported agricultural products are becoming more accessible to a larger number of people.
India’s average ethanol blending rate with petroleum for calendar year 2023 is estimated at 11.5 percent. The National Biofuels Policy of India, amended in May 2022, strengthens efforts to increase domestic ethanol output from sugarcane and multi-feed stocks by expediting pace toward blending goals.
Thailand is likely to lower biofuel consumption targets in the new AEDP 2022 due to expected lower fuel demand after 2027. The Thai government anticipates more electric vehicles on the road and increased rapid mass transit system, as well as double-track railway routes.
The 2022 U.S. Agricultural Export Yearbook provides a statistical summary of U.S. agricultural commodity exports to the world during the 2022 calendar year.
India’s average ethanol blending rate with petroleum for calendar year 2022 is estimated at 9.3 percent. India’s position as a structural surplus sugar producer and gradual utilization of alternative feedstocks will drive supply, while a 35 percent increase in offtakes by parastatal oil marketing companies for ethanol blending will drive demand.
Thailand doubled its target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in COP26. The Thai government has yet to finalize the new biofuel consumption targets. Biofuel consumption in 2021 and 2022 is still far below current targets due to the prolonged outbreak of COVID-19 and the slow economic recovery after the pandemic caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The 2021 U.S. Agricultural Export Yearbook provides a statistical summary of U.S. agricultural commodity exports to the world.
The government reduced the biodiesel mandatory blend rate from 10 percent to 7 percent in 2022. However, the current blend rates during February 5 – March 31, 2022, were set in range with a minimum of B5 for diesel fuel to help curb retail prices of diesels.
Since January 2021, the Indian government has agreed, in principle, to install or upgrade nearly 200 grain-based ethanol production facilities. Cumulatively, these projects would potentially contribute an additional 8.59 billion liters in ethanol capacity per year, supporting India’s blending mandates while simultaneously diversifying its biofuel feedstocks.
