Colombia: Biofuels Annual

Colombia’s ethanol consumption in 2024 is projected to increase to 728 million liters, mainly owing to the government’s restored 10 percent ethanol mandate (E10). Heightened ethanol demand is expected to be met through imports, primarily from the United States, despite the countervailing duty on U.S. fuel ethanol.

Thailand: Biofuels Annual

Thailand’s newly proposed National Energy Plan (NEP) lowered the on-road biofuel consumption target to reflect the lower mandated blend rate for biodiesel and set a target for Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from 2026.

Japan: Japan to Develop SAF Standards

In order to support the introduction of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) is going to hold expert committee meetings to discuss the framework of upcoming SAF regulations.
State-owned Indonesian energy company Pertamina will launch a new gasoline product containing 5 percent ethanol in late June 2023, utilizing ethanol derived from domestic sugarcane.

Vietnam: Vietnam Reduces MFN Tariff Rates on Ethanol

The Government of Vietnam (GVN) issued Decree 26/2023/ND-CP on May 31, 2023, lowering Most-Favored-Nation (MFN) tariff rates on ethanol to 10 percent from 15 percent.
The United States transitioned from a net importer of ethanol in 2009 to the world’s largest supplier, exporting a record 1.7 billion gallons in 2018. While the use of ethanol as a fuel for blending with gasoline accounted for three-fourths of the export expansion, ethanol for other nonfuel industrial applications has seen slower but steady growth.

India: Biofuels Annual

India’s average ethanol blending rate with petroleum for calendar year 2023 is estimated at 11.5 percent. The National Biofuels Policy of India, amended in May 2022, strengthens efforts to increase domestic ethanol output from sugarcane and multi-feed stocks by expediting pace toward blending goals.

Colombia: Biofuels Annual

In 2023, ethanol production is forecast to recover to 380 million liters due to better weather conditions. In 2022, ethanol production decreased as adverse weather conditions and high sugar prices led to local producers prioritizing sugar production.

Philippines: Biofuels Annual

In support of climate action, the Philippines calculated its carbon intensity for ethanol made from molasses and sugarcane at 46.8 gCO2e/MJ, and of biodiesel from crude coconut oil and refined coconut oil at 32.8 gCO2e/MJ and 31.5 gCO2e/MJ, respectively.

Thailand: Biofuels Annual

Thailand is likely to lower biofuel consumption targets in the new AEDP 2022 due to expected lower fuel demand after 2027. The Thai government anticipates more electric vehicles on the road and increased rapid mass transit system, as well as double-track railway routes.
