India: Excess Rains Support Higher Rabi Planting Area

The southwest monsoon concluded on October 25, 2021, while the northeast monsoon set in on the same date. Rainfall during the northeast monsoon, also referred to as the post-monsoon season (October-December), was 44 percent higher (178 mm) than the normal fifty-year average.
In response to Hong Kong’s new quarantine requirements on locally based cargo crew, on December 30, 2021, Cathay Pacific airlines announced the suspension of all long-haul cargo and cargo-only passenger flights until January 6, 2022.

Poland: Poland Increases the Excise Tax on Alcohol

On January 1, 2022, Poland implemented an amendment to the excise duty act on alcohol. The amendment increases the excise tax on alcohol by 10 percent and proposes the Excise Map, a schedule of additional excise tax increases of five percent each year during 2023-2027.

Ukraine: Ukrainian Draft Order Rescinds EU Equivalency

The Ministry of Economy of Ukraine published a draft order which, if passed, establishes a general framework for food safety system equivalency determination. As a part of this framework, Ukraine plans to cancel the Ukraine-EU equivalency status for products of animal origin, which was established in April 2014.
On January 11, 2022, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced that India and the United States agreed to a framework that will implement market access for agricultural products from both countries. Among the successes, India agreed to finalize the mutually agreed export certificate to allow the importation of U.S. pork and pork products.

ASF outbreak was officially confirmed in Thailand on January 11, 2022. Swine production is expected to decline by 35-40 percent in 2022, causing an upward price pressure on pork meat which is expected to increase around 30 percent compared to 2021.

European Union: New EU Labeling Rules for Wines

On December 6, 2021, the European Union published new rules concerning wine, dealcoholized and partially dealcoholized wine, and aromatized wine. These new rules introduce a compulsory nutrition declaration and a compulsory list of ingredients for wine products sold on the EU market beginning on December 8, 2023.
On January 11, 2021, the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced that India and the United States agreed to a framework that will implement market access for agricultural products from both countries.
