Portugal is a member of the European Union (EU) and it follows EU directives and regulations. This report is an update of PT1205 and outlines the applicable legislation regarding the export of U.S. food products to Portugal, particularly those rules that differ from EU legislation. This report should be read in conjunction with the EU-28 Food and Agricultural Import Regulations and Standards Report. The General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) requires enterprises be registered with the Bureau of Import and Export Food Safety before exporting most food and beverage products as part of the requirements enumerated in Decree 248.
In 2024, Bulgarian imports from the United States were nearly $100 million, slightly lower than in 2023, but still up over 50 percent since 2019. Imports of U.S. products were driven by several product groups such as U.S. beef, tree and ground nuts, food preparations, whiskies, essential oils, and rubber.
