India: Pulses Market and Policy Changes - A Review of the Last 5 Years

Pulses are a major source of protein for a majority of Indians, particularly the vegetarian population. The Government of India has implemented a number of interventionist policies ranging from import bans to export subsidies over the last five years alone. However, these policies have failed to 1) cover India’s growing supply-demand gap; 2) stabilize pulses prices; and 3) appease the farmers that represent a strong voting base.
