India: Optimism Grows for a Replenishing Monsoon

A highly erratic southwest monsoon in 2015 followed by a relatively warm winter has affected agricultural production across India. The prospect of an above normal monsoon coupled with an adequate seed supply has raised expectations for a large 2016 Kharif and subsequent Rabi crop. Low reservoir levels and a recent, strong heatwave continue affecting the existing Rabi crop.
