Global Food Security Act
President Obama signed the Global Food Security Act into law on July 20, 2016, reaffirming the United States’ commitment to ending global hunger, poverty and child malnutrition. The law reinforces the federal government’s successful approach to increasing food security and nutrition through the Feed the Future initiative.
USDA’s ongoing programs are critical components of this whole-of-government approach. USDA contributes to global food security and nutrition through programs focusing on international food assistance, international capacity building and development, and basic and applied research, as well as through data and information sharing and the promotion of science-based policies and regulations that expand agricultural markets and trade.
USDA has an international presence at nearly 100 diplomatic missions around the world, covering more than 170 countries, collaborating with foreign governments, multilateral organizations, non-government partners and other stakeholders to achieve food security goals.
USDA also provides leadership in multilateral food security initiatives, such as the Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) initiative, the Global Alliance for Climate Smart Agriculture, the Committee on World Food Security and the G-20 Meeting of Agricultural Chief Scientists.
