In 2024, Nigeria created the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development to unlock potential in the country’s vast but underdeveloped livestock sector. The Ministry’s leadership has focused on increasing commercial productivity, which may lead to more interest in U.S. live animal, genetics, and animal feed product exports.

India: India Halal Market Update - 2023

On January 17, 2023, the Indian government issued Notification No. 25/2022-23) proposing draft guidelines to streamline the halal certification process for export of meat and meat products from India.
The Namibian Ministry of Agriculture appears to have granted an extension to consignments that were already prepared for departure to Namibia before the announcement of the Circular V15 of 2022 on December 7, 2022.

Philippines: Poultry MDM Tariffs Extended Through 2024

On January 13, 2023, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. signed Executive Order (EO) 13, series of 2023, extending 5 percent tariffs for mechanically deboned or separated poultry (chicken and turkey) imports through December 31, 2024. The EO was published on January 20, 2023 and takes effect immediately.
On December 19, 2022, the U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), in consultation with Colombia's National Institute for Surveillance of Food and Medicines (INVIMA), updated the labeling requirements for meat products listed on the FSIS Export Library page for Colombia.

Opportunities for U.S. Consumer-Oriented Products in Peru

Peru is the third-largest South American market for U.S. consumer-oriented agricultural products. Increasing wealth and lower barriers to entry were facilitated by the implementation of the U.S.-Peru Trade Promotion Agreement (PTPA), resulting in a 423-percent increase in consumer-oriented exports from $65 million in 2009 to $340 million in 2021.
In a signed letter to the Veterinary Medical Officer of USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), dated January 12, 2023, the Acting Chief Veterinary Officer of the Ghanaian Veterinary Services Directorate of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture acknowledged receipt of the FSIS’ proposed certificate of export for pork and pork products, and confirmed its acceptance.

South Africa: Bone-in Chicken Shortage

Numerous fast-food restaurants in South Africa have announced supply shortages of bone-in chicken products, with KFC closing 70 restaurants. Although loadshedding, or rolling blackouts, have been blamed for the shortage, record-low imports in the later half of 2022 driven by high tariffs are certainly a significant factor.
On January 10, 2023, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare/Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) issued an order pertaining to FSSAI Order TIC-20012/2/2021-IMPORTS-FSSAI (E-2475), extending for a second time, the effective compliance date.
Egypt has notified new halal requirements and procedures for food products to the World Trade Organization (WTO) via a Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) addendum notification. The notification postpones the halal certification requirement on milk and dairy products until April 1, 2023.
