Maintaining Hungary’s GE-free status remains a government priority. Although the country’s scientific and breeding institutions were supportive of genome editing, the European Commission’s (EC) legislative proposal on new genomic techniques (NGTs) was caught in political crossfire. At the same time, in the case of an enabling legislative environment in the EU, the country would be open to adopting innovative, non-transgenic biotechnologies but only with strong guarantees.
