China: Biotechnology and Other New Production Technologies Annual

  |   Attaché Report (GAIN)   |   CH2025-0224
China continues to advance its agricultural biotechnology research innovation system and promote the commercial cultivation of domestically developed genetically engineered (GE) food and feed crops, specifically GE corn. Industry contacts estimate that in 2025 China planted around three million hectares of GE corn and soybeans, over four times that of 2024. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs approved the first gene-edited rice event for local cultivation in December 2024, marking an important step toward permitting the commercialization of gene-edited crops.
