WORLD DEVELOPMENTS
Poland: The processed tobacco
import quota for 2002 was reduced from 1,300 tons to 300 tons. Tariffs for
processed tobacco remain at 55 percent for within quota imports and 230 percent
for out-of-quota imports for WTO members. This
75-percent reduction will result in a significant cost increase to cigarette
manufacturers that import ingredients not produced in Poland. Sources
expected that the reduced import quota may result in increased leaf shipments by
Poland. PL2003
