WORLD DEVELOPMENTS

Highlights:

Dominican Republic:  Dark air and sun-cured tobacco production, which is used for filler in cigars, is expected to rebound to historical levels in 2002.  Dark air and sun-cured production dropped almost 80 percent in 2000 as a result of the cigar market crash.  Production is expected to reach 11,245 metric tons, up 8 percent from the previous year. DR2014

Poland:  Leaf production in 2002 is expected to reach 27,000 tons, up nearly 27 percent from the previous year because of favorable weather conditions.  Over 50 percent of last year’s crop was destroyed by adverse weather conditions.   PL2011

World Auction Updates:

Zimbabwe Tobacco Auction Update:  Zimbabwe’s Tobacco Marketing Board reported that 47.16 million kg of flue-cured was sold after ten weeks of the auction season for an average price of U.S.$2.06 per kilogram.  This is down 334,000 kg from the same period last season, while average prices are down almost 2 percent.
