Canadian Flue-Cured Auction Update: Through the 96th sale day of the 2001/2002 Canadian flue-cured tobacco marketing season, the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board reports that 47,202 metric tons of flue-cured tobacco have been sold. Prices in Canadian currency are averaging $3.95 (US$2.45) per kilogram. Sales of "A" graded leaves account for about 74 percent of purchases. Last year prices in Canadian currency averaged $3.90 (US$2.41) per kilogram over the entire season which lasted 73 days with 48,272 tons sold. The Canadian flue-cured tobacco marketing season is schedule to end March 5, 2002.
U.S. DEVELOPMENTS
2002-Crop Burley Tobacco Program Provisions Announced: The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the provisions of the 2002 Burley Tobacco Program. The national marketing quota for the 2002 crop is 324.2 million pounds, down from the 2001 quota of 332.0 million pounds. FSA PR # 1431.02
U.S. Burley and Dark Leaf Tobacco Auction Update: The 2001/2002 U.S. burley and dark leaf auction season closed February 26th. Total gross sales (auction and contract sales combined) of U.S. burley tobacco (type 31) were estimated to reach 349 million pounds, averaging $1.97 per pound. Last season total gross sales (auction and contract sales combined) reached 332 million pounds, averaging $1.96 per pounds.
