AUCTIONS:

Canadian Flue-Cured Auction Update: The 2000/2001 Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Auction closed February 8th. The Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers’ Marketing Board reports that 48,272 metric tons of flue-cured tobacco were sold as compared to 64,582 tons for the same period last year. Prices in Canadian currency are averaging $3.90 (US$2.58) per kilogram, up nearly 10 percent from last year. Sales of "A" graded leaves account for about 77 percent of purchases, up from 69 percent last year.

RECENT REPORTS:

U.S.D.A. Announces Provisions of the 2001-Crop Burley Tobacco Program and No-Net-Cost Assessments: The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the provisions of the 2001 burley tobacco program. The national marketing quota for the 2001 crop is 332.0 million pounds, up from the 2000 quota of 247.4 million pounds. FSA PR # 1430.1

AUCTIONS:

U.S. Burley and Dark Leaf Tobacco Auction Update: The 2000/2001 U.S. burley and dark leaf auction season closed February 22nd. Sales of type 31 burley tobacco totaled 245.8 million pounds this season compared to 580.7 million pounds from a year ago. Prices averaged $1.95 per pound, up nearly 3 percent from last season. Loan receipts this season dropped 32 percent or totaled 7.9 percent of the gross sales. Approximately 62 percent of the 2000 effective burley quota was sold at auction.
