China: Planted area and production remained stable during 2000 and are expected to remain constant in 2001. Cigarette production rose from 16.4 trillion pieces in 1999 to 17.1 trillion pieces in 2000. For 2001, cigarette production is forecast to remain unchanged. As a result of increased cigarette production, domestic stocks are estimated to drop by 20 percent in 2000. CH0044
Portugal: The Portugal cigarette manufacturers are expanding overseas sales of cigarettes. Leaf imports in 2000 nearly doubled from a year ago in order to keep up with demand. Leaf imports are projected to reach 17,000 tons in 2001 up from 15,000 tons in 2000. Cigarette production is expected to reach 20.4 million pieces in 2000, up 19 percent and is forecast at 21.3 million pieces in 2001. PO0032
Zimbabwe: Flue-cured production is forecast to drop by nearly 28 percent in 2001. The 28- percent drop is due to farm invasions prohibiting production, and fuel, electricity and finance shortages. For 2000, flue-cured production reached 235,000 metric tons, up 22 percent due to optimum growing conditions. The price (per kg) received for the 2000 marketing crop was Z$81(U.S. $1.70), up from Z$66.28 (U.S. $1.70) in 1999. RH0005
Canadian Flue-Cured Auction Update: Through the 48th sale day of the 2000/2001 Canadian flue-cured tobacco marketing season, the Ontario Flue-Cured Tobacco Growers Marketing Board reports that 33,817 metric tons of flue-cured tobacco have been sold. This is a 9- percent increase in sales compared to the same period of last year. Prices in Canadian currency are averaging $3.81 (US$2.54) per kilogram, up 11 percent from a year ago. So far this year, sales of "A" graded leaves account for 75 percent of purchases, up from 65 percent last year.

U.S. Tobacco Industry To Buy 297 Million Pounds of 2001 Flue-Cured Tobacco: USDA announced that U.S. cigarette manufacturers plan to purchase 297 million pounds (farm sales weight) of 2001-crop flue-cured tobacco. In 2000, manufacturers intended purchases totaled 286 million pounds. 1665.htm
U.S. Industry Buys 242 Million Pounds of 1999 Burley Tobacco: The Farm Service Agency announced that those U.S. cigarette manufacturers who are subject to the purchase requirements of Section 320A of the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1938, as amended (1938 Act), bought 241.9 million pounds (farm sales weight) of burley tobacco during the 1999 marketing season, October 1, 1999 through September 30, 2000. USDA Issues 2000 Grade Loan Rates For Cigar Binder Types 54-55 Tobacco: USDAs Commodity Credit Corporation issued price support loan rates for the grades of 2000 crop cigar binder tobaccos, type 54 and 55. The 2000 rates are based on the average support level of $1.238 per pound announced March 1, 2000, for types 54 and 55 and 42-44, unchanged from the 1999 crop support level. FSA PR# 1684.htm
Provisions of the 2001-Crop Flue-Cured Tobacco Program: The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that the national marketing quota for the 2001 crop of flue-cured tobacco is 548.9 million pounds, up from the 2000 quota of 543.0 million pounds. FSA PR# 1680
Auction Reports:
2000/2001 U.S. Burley Auction Update: Through the fourth week of the burley tobacco auction season prices were fairly steady. Growers placed 7.7 percent of the gross sales under loan so far this season compared to 34.1 percent a year ago. Approximately 47 percent of the effective quota has been sold at auction. Total gross sales of U.S. burley tobacco (type 31) reached 76,975 metric tons, down almost 60 percent from the same period last year.
