U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR January-September 1998
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-September 1998 totaled 156,194 metric tons, valued at $1.07 million. This represents nearly an 8-percent decrease in quantity and a 9-percent decrease in value when compared to January-September 1997. This drop is due to primarily to competitive prices on the world market for flue-cured and burley tobacco. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 82,340 tons; Japan, 27,391 tons; Turkey,11,481 tons; Thailand, 5,467 tons; Korea, 4,152 tons; and Malaysia, 3,925 tons.
Flue-cured exports for January-September 1998 reached 70,812 metric tons, valued at $511 million. This is down 12 percent in quantity and down nearly 13 percent in value from January-September 1997. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 36,572 tons; Japan, 13,814 tons; Korea, 4,152; Turkey, 5,875 tons; and Malaysia, 3,005 tons.
Burley exports for January-September 1998 totaled 44,498 tons, valued at $361 million, down nearly 13 percent in quantity and 11 percent in value from January-September 1997 due to decreased cigarette consumption. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 24,729 tons; Japan, 7,426 tons; Thailand, 3,935 tons; and Turkey, 3,875 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in January-September 1998 totaled 157 billion pieces, valued at $3.2 billion, down slightly in quantity and up 1.5 percent in value from January-September 1997. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1998 are: Japan, 54 billion pieces; the European Union, 38 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Lebanon, 8.1 billion pieces; Russian Federation, 6.2 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 6.2 billion pieces; Azerbaijan, 5.1 billion pieces Singapore, 4.8 billion pieces; and Cyprus, 4.2 billion pieces.
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-September 1998 totaled 49,191 metric tons, valued at $411 million, up 20 percent in quantity and nearly 25 percent in value from January-September 1997. The leading export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 19,131 tons; Turkey, 10,299 tons; Japan,4,574 tons; Egypt, 3,911 tons; Czech Republic, 3,279 tons; and Poland, 3,278 tons.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-September 1998 totaled 181,062 tons and were valued at $594 million, down nearly 23 percent in quantity and down 31 percent in value when compared to January-September 1997. U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1998 totaled 204,178 tons, valued at $656 million, down 23 percent in quantity and 34 percent in value. These decreases are partly due to the large tobacco stocks in the United States, a fall in cigarette consumption in some markets, and the uncertainty concerning the outcome of the U.S. tobacco settlement. Imports of oriental tobacco reached 60,870 tons and was valued at $20.20 million in 1998, down 6 percent in quantity and up 1.4 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1997. Flue-cured imports so far in 1998 totaled 27,356 tons and was valued at $92 million, down 52 percent in quantity and down nearly 62 percent in value from January-September 1997. Burley imports for January-September 1998 totaled 25,538 tons and was valued at $93 million, down nearly 46 percent in quantity and down 52 percent in value for the same period in 1997. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1998 total 41,971 tons and was valued at $16 million, up 27 percent in quantity and down 27 percent in value from January-September 1997. So far in 1998, the leading suppliers to the United States of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 45,893 tons; Brazil, 35,714 tons; the European Union, 19,546 tons; Argentina, 10,194; Malawi, 7,978; Canada, 7,792 tons; Dominican Republic, 6,631 tons; Zimbabwe, 5,157 tons; and Indonesia, 4,867 tons.
