WORLD DEVELOPMENTS

Highlights:

Brazil: The Brazilian Tobacco Trade Production Association (SINDIFUMO) estimated Southern Brazil production for marketing year 1998 at 403 metric tons, down 7.5 percent compared to previous estimates due to excessive rainfall. Flue-cured tobacco was estimated at 315,920 tons, and burly was estimated at 83,727 tons for 1998. SINDIFUMO has not changed its estimate for tobacco planted area for marketing year 1999.

Auctions:

Malawi Tobacco Auction Update: Through the 14th week, the Malawi Tobacco Control Commission reported 7,174 metric tons of flue-cured tobacco were sold at auction in Malawi. Last year 5,866 metric tons were sold in the same number of weeks. Flue prices were 31-percent lower than last year at US$1.35 per kilogram. Burley sales in the first 14 weeks of this year's Malawi auction season totaled 73,645 metric tons, 7 percent more than last year. Prices for Burley were US$1.30 per kilogram, about 21-percent below last season.

Zimbabwe Flue-Cured Tobacco Auction Update: Zimbabwe’s Tobacco Association reported 162,858 metric tons of flue-cured tobacco were sold during the first 18 weeks of the auction season for an average price of U.S.$1.76 per kilogram. Sales during the eighteenth week totaled 15,635 tons and averaged about $2.06 per kilogram, well above the season average price. The volume sold to date is 6 percent ahead of the volume sold during the first 18 weeks last year, but the average price is down about 28 percent from a year earlier.
