U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY- JUNE 1998
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-June 1998 totaled 124,663 metric tons, valued at $839.3 million. This represents a 12-percent decrease in quantity and 12-percent decrease in value when compared to January-June 1997. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 63,487 tons; Japan, 27,211 tons; Thailand, 5,467 tons; Turkey, 5,384 tons; Korea, 4,152 tons; and Malaysia, 2,445 tons.
Flue-cured exports for January-June 1998 reached 57,028 metric tons, valued at $412 million. This is down nearly 15 percent in quantity and in value from January-June 1997. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 28,319 tons; Japan, 13,814 tons; Korea, 4,152; Turkey, 2,666 tons; and Malaysia, 1,921 tons.
Burley exports for January-June 1998 totaled 35,280 tons, valued at $283.5 million, down nearly 21 percent in quantity and 20 percent in value from January-June 1997. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 18,263 tons; Japan, 7,246 tons; Thailand, 3,935 tons; and Turkey, 1,936 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in January-June 1998 totaled 105.2 billion pieces, valued at $2.17 billion, down 1 percent in quantity and up 2 percent in value from January-June 1997. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1998 are: Japan, 35.9 billion pieces; the European Union, 25.7 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Lebanon, 5.4 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 4.37 billion pieces; Russian Federation, 4.33 billion pieces; Cyprus, 3.23 billion pieces; Singapore, 3.24 billion pieces; and Azerbaijan, 3.24 billion pieces.
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-June 1998 totaled 34,173 metric tons, valued at $278 million, up nearly 22 percent in quantity and 29 percent in value from January-June 1997. The leading export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 13,467 tons; Turkey, 7,122 tons; Japan, 3,054 tons; Czech Republic, 2,566 tons; Egypt, 2,525 tons; and Poland, 2,398 tons.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-June 1998 totaled 109,880 tons, valued at $362 million, down nearly 25 percent in quantity and down 34 percent in value when compared to January-June 1997. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 42,083 tons, valued at $21.1 million in 1998, down nearly 32 percent in quantity and down nearly 27 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1997. Flue-cured imports so far in 1998 totaled 14,251 tons, valued at $47 million, down 39 percent in quantity and down 50 percent in value from January-June 1997. Burley imports for the first half of the year totaled 11,128 tons, valued at $34 million, down nearly 49 percent in quantity and down 60 percent in value from the same six month period in 1997. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1998 total 24,328 tons, valued at $9 million, up nearly 41 percent in quantity and down nearly 44 percent in value from the same six month period in 1997. So far in 1998, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 31,281 tons; Brazil, 19,894 tons; the European Union, 9,653 tons; Canada, 7,033 tons; Malawi, 6,263 tons; Dominican Republic, 5,648 tons; Argentina, 4,882 tons; Zimbabwe, 3,639 tons; and Macedonia (Skopje) 3,098 tons.
U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1998 totaled 137,123 tons, valued at $460 million. This represents a nearly 20 percent decrease in quantity and a nearly 32 percent decrease in value from the same period in 1997.
