U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-JULY 1998
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-July 1998 totaled 133,589 metric tons, valued at $900 million. This represents a 10.6 - percent decrease in quantity and 11.4-percent decrease in value when compared to January-July 1997. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 70,235 tons; Japan, 27,391 tons; Thailand, 5,467 tons; Turkey, 5,384 tons; Korea, 4,152 tons; and Malaysia, 2,913 tons.
Flue-cured exports for January-July 1998 reached 61,525 metric tons, valued at $445 million. This is down nearly 13 percent in quantity and down 12 percent in value from January-July 1997. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 32,040 tons; Japan, 13,814 tons; Korea, 4,152; Turkey, 2,666 tons; and Malaysia, 2,261 tons.
Burley exports for January-July 1998 totaled 37,064 tons, valued at $299.7 million, down nearly 21 percent in quantity and nearly 20 percent in value from January-July 1997. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in1998 are: the European Union, 19,536 tons; Japan, 7,426 tons; Thailand, 3,935 tons; and Turkey, 1,936 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in January-July 1998 totaled 121 billion pieces, valued at $2.52 billion, down slightly in quantity and up 2.4 percent in value from January-July 1997. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1998 are: Japan, 43 billion pieces; the European Union, 28.7 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Lebanon, 6.4 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 4.9 billion pieces; Russian Federation, 4.6 billion pieces; Singapore, 4 billion pieces; Azerbaijan, 3.9 billion pieces; and Cyprus, 3.5 billion pieces.
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-July 1998 totaled 38,408 metric tons, valued at $316 million, up 21 percent in quantity and nearly 28 percent in value from January-July 1997. The leading export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 14,595 tons; Turkey, 8,170 tons; Japan, 3,503 tons; Czech Republic, 3,136 tons; Egypt, 2,921 tons; and Poland, 2,570 tons.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-July 1998 totaled 135,200 tons, valued at $452 million, down 22 percent in quantity and down nearly 30 percent in value when compared to January-July 1997. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 53,740 tons, valued at $27.1 million in 1998, down nearly 16 percent in quantity and down nearly 8 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1997. Flue-cured imports so far in 1998 totaled 6,737 tons, valued at $53 million, down 50 percent in quantity and down 63 percent in value from January-July 1997. Burley imports for January-July 1998 totaled 13,698 tons, valued at $44 million, down 50 percent in quantity and down 60 percent in value from the same period in 1997. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1998 total 30,711 tons, valued at $12 million, up 35 percent in quantity and down nearly 36 percent in value from January-July 1997. So far in 1998, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 41,780 tons; Brazil, 25,013 tons; the European Union, 13,870 tons; Canada, 7,319 tons; Malawi, 6,599 tons; Dominican Republic, 5,998 tons; Argentina, 5,208 tons; Zimbabwe, 4,221 tons; and Indonesia, 4,027 tons.
U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1998 totaled 160,432 tons, valued at $527 million. This represents a nearly 24-percent decrease in quantity and 34- percent decrease in value from the same period in 1997.
