U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-APRIL 1998

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-April 1998 totaled 90,059 metric tons, valued at $581.8 million. This represents a 1 percent decrease in quantity and nearly 2 percent decrease in value when compared to January-April 1997. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 39,756 tons; Japan, 23,939 tons; Thailand, 5,448 tons; Turkey, 5,384 tons; and Malaysia, 1,750 tons.

Flue-cured exports for January-April 1998 reached 42,463 metric tons, valued at $301.3 million. This is down nearly 3 percent in quantity and down nearly 6 value from January-April 1997. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 18,975 tons; Japan, 13,304 tons; Turkey, 2,666 tons; Malaysia, 1,465 tons; and Korea, 1,403 tons.

Burley exports for January-April 1998 totaled 22,993 tons, valued at $179.6 million, down nearly 9 percent in quantity and 9 percent in value from January-April 1997. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 9,360 tons; Japan, 4,641 tons; Thailand, 3,935 tons; and Turkey, 1,936 tons.

U.S. cigarette exports in January-April 1998 totaled 66.4 billion pieces, valued at $1.37 billion, down 5 percent in quantity and nearly 2 percent in value from January-April 1997. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1998 are: Japan, 23.0 billion pieces; the European Union, 13.9 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Lebanon, 3.7 billion pieces; the Russian Federation, 3.2 billion pieces; Cyprus, 2.9 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 2.7 billion pieces; Azerbaijan, 2.1 billion; Singapore, 1.6 billion pieces; and Ukraine, 1.33 billion pieces.

U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-April 1998 totaled 21,917 metric tons, valued at $33.7 million, up nearly 21 percent in quantity and 32 percent in value from January-April 1997. The leading export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 8,345 tons; Turkey, 4,502 tons; Japan, 2,144 tons; Egypt, 2,111 tons; the Czech Republic, 1,568 tons; and Poland, 1,484 tons.

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-April 1998 totaled 86,746 tons, valued at $31.7 million, down 15 percent in quantity and down 24 percent in value when compared to January-April 1997. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 39,786 tons, valued at $20 million so far in 1998, down nearly 19 percent in quantity and down 12 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1997. Flue-cured imports so far in 1998 totaled 12,620 tons, valued at $41.3 million, down 20 percent in quantity and down 31 percent in value from January-April 1997. Burley imports for the first four months of 1998 totaled 9,520 tons, valued at $30.3 million, down 31 percent in quantity and down 46 percent in value from the same four month period in 1997. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1998 total 11,390 tons, valued at $5.2 million, up nearly 6 percent in quantity and down 64 percent in value from the same four month period in 1997. So far in 1998, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 29,268 tons; Brazil, 9,164 tons; the European Union, 8,034 tons; Canada, 5,825 tons; Malawi, 5,290 tons; the Dominican Republic, 4,476 tons; Greece, 3,925 tons; and Macedonia, 3,098 tons.

U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1998 totaled 88,485 tons, valued at $315 million. This represents a 16 percent decrease in quantity and 23 percent decrease in value from the same period in 1997.
