U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-MARCH 1998
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-March 1998 totaled 60,299 metric tons, valued at $382.6 million. This represents a 15-percent decrease in quantity and a 17-percent decrease in value when compared to January-March 1997. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 27,983 tons; Japan, 13,412 tons; Thailand, 5,448 tons; Malaysia, 1,402 tons; and the Russian Federation, 1,015 tons.
Flue-cured exports for January-March 1998 reached 27,342 metric tons, valued at $199.6 million. This is down 24 percent in quantity and down 24 percent in value from January-March 1997. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 13,283 tons; Japan, 7,056 tons; Malaysia, 1,193 tons; and Thailand, 838 tons.
Burley exports for January-March 1998 totaled 13,198 tons, valued at $107.0 million, down 27 percent in quantity and 24 percent in value from January-March 1997. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 5,945 tons; Thailand, 3,935 tons; and the Philippines, 745 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in January-March 1998 totaled 50.1 billion pieces, valued at $1.04 billion, down 9 percent in quantity and 6 percent in value from January-March 1997. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1998 are: Japan, 17.4 billion pieces; the European Union, 9.5 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Cyprus, 2.7 billion pieces; Lebanon, 2.7 billion pieces; Russian Federation, 2.7 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 2.3 billion pieces; and Hong Kong, 1.2 billion pieces
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-March 1998 totaled 17,134 metric tons, valued at $13.7 million, up nearly 23 percent in quantity and 28 percent in value from January-March 1997. The leading export markets so far in 1998 are: the European Union, 6,549 tons; Turkey, 3,323 tons; Egypt, 1,866 tons; Japan, 1,676 tons; and Poland, 1,199 tons.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-March 1998 totaled 67,365 tons, valued at $25.0 million, down 16 percent in quantity and down nearly 22 percent in value when compared to January-March 1997. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 31,929 tons, valued at $16 million in 1998, down nearly 24 percent in quantity and down nearly 18 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1997. Flue-cured imports so far in 1998 totaled 9,153 tons, valued at $30.6 million, down 20 percent in quantity and down 34 percent in value from January-March 1997. Burley imports for the first three months of 1998 totaled 7,782 tons, valued at $25.0 million, down 19 percent in quantity and down 33 percent in value from the same three month period in 1997. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1998 total 8,638 tons, valued at $4.1 million, up nearly 11 percent in quantity and down 68 in value from the same three month period in 1997. So far in 1998, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 22,593 tons; Brazil, 8,123 tons; the European Union, 6,990 tons; Canada, 4,659 tons; Malawi, 3,880 tons; Greece, 3,544 tons; and the Dominican Republic, 3,429 tons.
U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1998 totaled 58,363 tons, valued at $192 million. This represents a 22-percent decrease in quantity and 36-percent decrease in value from the same period in 1997.
