U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY 1998

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January 1998 totaled 20,666 metric tons, valued at $113 million. This represents a 3.7 percent increase in quantity and a 9.9 percent decrease in value when compared to January 1997. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1998 are: Japan, 6,483 tons; the European Union, 4,539 tons; Thailand, 1,496 tons; Switzerland, 1,175 tons; and Malaysia, 514, tons.

Flue-cured exports in January 1998 reached 9,882 metric tons, valued at $71 million. This is down 23 percent in quantity and down 23 percent in value from 1997. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets in January 1998 were: the European Union, 5,196 tons; Japan, 2,137 tons; Thailand, 838 tons; and Malaysia, 481 tons.

Burley exports in January 1998 totaled 1,391 metric tons, valued at $10 million. This represents a 47 percent decrease in quantity and 49 percent decrease in value. The leading U.S. burley export markets in January 1998 were: the European Union, 622 tons; Philippines, 481 tons; and Japan, 180 ton.

U.S. cigarette exports in January 1998 totaled 16.3 billion pieces, valued at $330 million. This is up 3.3 percent in quantity and 4.9 percent in value from January 1997. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets in January 1998 were: Japan, 5.55 billion pieces; the European Union, 3.78 billion pieces; Singapore, 959 million pieces; Lebanon, 873 million pieces; Cyprus, 853 million pieces; and Hong Kong, 719 million pieces.

U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco in 1998 totaled 6,286 tons, valued at $41 million. This is up 63 percent in quantity and 53 percent in value from January 1998. The leading export markets in January 1998 were: the European Union, 2,603 tons; Egypt, 1,272 tons; Turkey, 1,041 tons; Poland, 457 tons; and Japan, 304 tons.

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) in January 1998 totaled 29,937 tons, valued at $117 million. This represents a nearly 29 percent decrease in quantity and a 25 percent decrease in value when compared to January 1997. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 16,222 tons, valued at $76 million in January 1998. This is down 23 percent in quantity and down 21 percent in value when compared to 1997. Flue-cured imports in January 1998 totaled 4,421 tons, valued at $14.9 million, down 21 percent in quantity and down 30 percent in value from January 1997. Burley imports in January 1998 reached 5,100 tons, valued at $18.8 million, down 23 percent in quantity and down nearly 30 percent in value from January 1997. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco in January 1998 totaled 1,207 tons, valued at $806 million, down nearly 74 in quantity and down 93 in value from January 1997. The leading suppliers of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption in January 1998 were: Turkey, 11,434 tons; Brazil, 3,394 tons; the European Union, 2,705 tons; Malawi, 2,571 tons; Bulgaria, 2,322 tons; and Canada, 1,706 tons.

U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco in January 1998 totaled 21,331 tons, valued at $72 million. This represents a decrease of 20 percent in quantity and a nearly 32 percent decrease in value.
