U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR 1997
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for 1997 totaled 221,510 metric tons, valued at $1.55 billion. This represents a slight increase in quantity and a nearly 12 percent increase in value when compared to 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets in 1997 were: the European Union, 102,037 tons; Japan, 36,517 tons; Turkey, 19,124 tons; Thailand, 9,794 tons; Malaysia, 8,867 tons; the Republic of Korea, 7,086 tons; Taiwan 5,416 tons; and the Dominican Republic, 4,276 tons.
Flue-cured exports for 1997 reached 116,458 tons, valued at $832.4 million, up slightly in quantity and up 6 percent in value from 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets in 1997 were: the European Union, 47,788 tons; Japan, 23,731 tons; Turkey, 10,112 tons; the Republic of Korea, 6,541 tons; Malaysia, 5,563 tons; Thailand, 5,198 tons; and Taiwan, 5,036 tons.
Burley exports for 1997 totaled 56,803 tons, valued at $454.9 million, up 8 percent in quantity and up nearly 20 percent in value from 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets in 1997 were: the European Union, 28,946 tons; Turkey, 7,471 tons; Japan, 6,702 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Malaysia, 2,618 tons; the Philippines, 2,305 tons; and Switzerland, 1,561 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in 1997 totaled 21.7 billion pieces, valued at $4.40 billion, down 11 percent in quantity and down nearly 7 percent in value from 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets in 1997 were: Japan, 67.6 billion pieces; the European Union, 50.2 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Cyprus, 9.94 billion pieces; Lebanon, 10.3 billion pieces; the Russian Federation, 10.2 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 9.34 billion pieces; the Republic of Korea, 7.23 billion pieces; Singapore, 5.91 billion pieces; and Turkey, 5.85 billion pieces.
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for 1997 totaled 53,597 metric tons, valued at $440 million, up 7 percent in quantity and up 15 percent in value from 1996. The leading export markets in 1997 were: the European Union, 24,175 tons; Turkey, 10,036 tons; Japan, 4,226 tons; Poland, 4,337 tons; and Egypt, 2,869 tons.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for 1997 totaled 294,230 tons, valued at $1.1 million, down nearly 3 percent in quantity and up 18 percent in value when compared to 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 86,311 tons, valued at $401.5 million in 1997, down 8 percent in quantity and up 9 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports in 1997 totaled 64,717 tons, valued at $276.4 million, up 9 percent in quantity and up 18 percent in value from 1996. Burley imports in 1997 totaled 61,358 tons, valued at $244.9 million, up 9 percent in quantity and up 17 percent in value from 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco in 1997 total 39,534 tons, valued at $26.4 million, down 36 percent in quantity and down slightly in value from 1996. The leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption in 1997 were: Turkey, 76,612 tons; Brazil, 64,145 tons; Argentina, 25,589 tons; Malawi, 22,921 tons; the European Union, 23,967 tons; Greece, 14,579 tons; Indonesia, 12,056 tons; and Thailand, 10,988 tons.
U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco in 1997 totaled 306,838 tons, valued at $1.12 billion. This represents a 6 percent decrease in quantity and 7 percent increase in value from 1996.
