U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-NOVEMBER 1997
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-November 1997 totaled 201,560 metric tons, valued at $1.42 billion. This represents a slight increase in quantity and nearly an 11 percent increase in value when compared to January-November 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 95,064 tons; Japan, 31,652 tons; Turkey, 18,994 tons; Malaysia, 8,401; Thailand, 7,564 tons; the Republic of Korea, 7,086 tons; and the Dominican Republic, 3,971 tons.
Flue-cured exports for January-November 1997 reached 101,691 metric tons, valued at $730.7 million, up slightly in quantity and up 2 percent in value from January-November 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 42,884 tons; Japan, 19,879 tons; Turkey, 10,112 tons; the Republic of Korea, 6,541 tons; Malaysia, 5,136 tons; and Thailand, 3,194 tons.
Burley exports for January-November 1997 totaled 54,987 tons, valued at $440.4 million, up 20 percent in quantity and up 27 percent in value from January-November 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 28,593 tons; Turkey, 7,471 tons; Japan, 5,690 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Malaysia, 2,589 tons; the Philippines, 2,178 tons; and Switzerland, 1,557 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in January-November 1997 totaled 202.02 billion pieces, valued at $4.1 billion, down 10 percent in quantity and down 6 percent in value from January-November 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 62.9 billion pieces; the European Union, 45.8 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Cyprus, 9.82 billion pieces; Lebanon, 9.71 billion pieces; the Russian Federation, 9.65 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 8.74 billion pieces; the Republic of Korea, 6.61 billion pieces; and Singapore, 5.76 billion pieces.
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-November 1997 totaled 49,524 metric tons, valued at $405.3 million, up 8 percent in quantity and up 16 percent in value from January-November 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 23,127 tons; Turkey, 9,228 tons; Poland, 4,062 tons; Japan, 3,437 tons; and Egypt, 2,592 tons.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-November 1997 totaled 268,714 tons, valued at $985.1 million, down nearly 4 percent in quantity and up 15 percent in value when compared to January-November 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 73,420 tons, valued at $336.8 million in January-November 1997, down 8 percent in quantity and relatively constant in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 63,214 tons, valued at $270.8 million, up 12 percent in quantity and up 19 percent in value from January-November 1996. Burley imports through November of 1997 totaled 57,065 tons, valued at $230.3 million, up 7 percent in quantity and up 16 percent in value from January-November 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 38,105 tons, valued at $25.5 million, down 37 percent in quantity and down 1 percent in value through November in 1996. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 66,909 tons; Brazil, 62,684 tons; Argentina, 24,702 tons; Malawi, 20,454 tons; the European Union, 18,147 tons; Indonesia, 14,182 tons; Thailand, 10,119 tons; and Greece, 10,103 tons.
U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 288,830 tons, valued at $1.06 billion. This represents a 4 percent decrease in quantity and nearly a 10 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
