U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-AUGUST 1997
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-August 1997 totaled 158,614 metric tons, valued at $1.09 billion. This represents a 12 percent increase in quantity and a 25 percent increase in value when compared to January-August 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 74,996 tons; Japan, 25,816 tons; Turkey, 18,924 tons; Thailand, 7,564 tons; Malaysia, 6,545 tons; the Republic of Korea, 3,049 tons; and the Philippines, 2,425 tons.
Flue-cured exports for January-August 1997 reached 75,091 tons, valued at $543 million, up 14 percent in quantity and 19 percent in value from January-August 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 32,716 tons; Japan, 14,368 tons; Turkey, 10,112 tons; Malaysia, 4,022 tons; Thailand, 3,194 tons; Hong Kong, 1,215 tons; and Indonesia, 1,172 tons.
Burley exports for January-August 1997 totaled 49,046 metric tons, valued at $392 million, up 26 percent in quantity and 33 percent in value from January-August 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 24,515 tons; Turkey, 7,471 tons; Japan, 5,634 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; the Philippines, 1,569 tons; and Hong Kong, 534 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in January-August 1997 totaled 141.6 billion pieces, valued at $2.86 billion, down 10 percent in quantity and 7 percent in value from January-August 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 46 billion pieces; the European Union, 29 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Lebanon, 7.1 billion pieces; Cyprus, 6.8 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 6.2 billion pieces; and the Russian Federation, 6.1 billion pieces; and Hong Kong, 2.7 billion pieces.
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-August 1997 totaled 36,604 metric tons, valued at $291.8 million, up 19 percent in quantity and 21 percent in value from January-August 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, Japan, Turkey, Cyrus, and Egypt.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-August 1997 totaled 202,600 metric tons, valued at $748.9 million, up 19 percent in quantity, and 40 percent in value from January-August 1997. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 64,514 tons, valued at $294.7 million in January-August 1997, up nearly 74 percent in quantity and 87 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 47,377 tons, valued at $207.1 million, up 6 percent in quantity and up 11 percent in value from January-August 1997. Burley imports for the first 8 months of 1997 totaled 33,903 tons, valued at $137.1 million, down nearly 4 percent in quantity and up 11 percent in value from January-August 1997. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 27,069 tons, valued at $200 million, up 73 percent in quantity. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers of U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 58,451 tons; Brazil, 49,981 tons; the European Union, 15,340 tons; Argentina, 11,133 tons; Malawi, 10,541 tons; Greece, 9,581 tons; and Thailand, 8,850 tons.
U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 238,844 tons, valued at $907.8 million. This represents an 8 percent increase in quantity and a 23 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
