WORLD DEVELOPMENTS
Through the 16th week, the Malawi Tobacco Control Commission reported 7,081 metric tons of flue-cured tobacco were sold at auction in Malawi. Last year 8,322 metric tons were sold in the same number of weeks. Flue-Cured prices were 10 percent lower than last year at US$1.95 per kilogram. Burley sales in the first 16 weeks of this year's Malawi auction season totaled 80,455 metric tons, 4 percent more than last year. Prices for Burley were US$1.60 per kilogram, about the same as last season.
Zimbabwes Tobacco Marketing Board reported that 128,347 metric tons of flue-cured tobacco were sold during the first 15 weeks of the auction season for an average price of U.S.$2.41 per kilogram. Daily sales total about 2,000 tons and are averaging about $2.50 per kilogram, somewhat above the season average price. The volume sold to date is slightly below the volume sold during the first 15 weeks last year, but the average price is down about 18 percent from a year earlier.
