U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-JUNE 1997

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-June 1997 totaled 141,981 metric tons, valued at $959.6 million. This represents a 19 percent increase in quantity and a 30 percent increase in value when compared to January-June 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 67,065 tons; Japan, 25,948 tons; Turkey, 15,284 tons; Thailand, 7,564 tons; Malaysia, 5,345 tons; Switzerland, 3,097; and the Republic of Korea, 3,049 tons.

Flue-cured exports for January-June 1997 reached 66,953 metric tons, valued at $482.2 million, up 23 percent in quantity and 26 percent in value from January-June 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 28,224 tons; Japan, 14,368 tons; Turkey, 8,362 tons; Thailand, 3,194 tons; Malaysia, 3,099 tons; the Republic of Korea, 2,504 tons; and Hong Kong, 1,094 tons.

Burley exports for January-June 1997 totaled 44,610 tons, valued at $354.9 million, up 28 percent in quantity and 35 percent in value from January-June 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 22,857 tons; Turkey, 5,828 tons; Japan, 5,510 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Malaysia, 1,729 tons; Switzerland, 1,432 tons; and the Philippines, 1,233 tons.

U.S. cigarette exports in January-June 1997 totaled 106.8 billion pieces, valued at $2.13 billion, down 9 percent in quantity and 8 percent in value from January-June 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 35.3 billion pieces; the European Union, 22.0 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Cyprus, 5.6 billion pieces; Lebanon, 5.3 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 5.0 billion pieces; the Russian Federation, 4.5 billion pieces; the Republic of Korea, 3.6 billion pieces; and Singapore, 3.0 billion pieces..

U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-June 1997 totaled 28,072 metric tons, valued at $215.8 million, up 15 percent in quantity and 14 percent in value from January-June 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 14,318 metric tons; Turkey, 4,788 tons; Japan, 2,032 tons; Poland, 1,749 tons; and Egypt, 1,385 tons.

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-June 1997 totaled 145,950 tons, valued at $554.0 million, up 19 percent in quantity and 48 percent in value when compared to January-June 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 61,811 tons, valued at $288.2 million in January-June 1997, up nearly 76 percent in quantity and 96 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 23,817 tons, valued at $94.8 million, down 21 percent in quantity and down 18 percent in value from January-June 1996. Burley imports for the first six months of 1997 totaled 21,659 tons, valued at $88.9 million, up 10 percent in quantity and up 40 percent in value from January-June 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 17,304 tons, valued at $17.7 million, down 25 percent in quantity and up 46 percent in value from the same six month period in 1996. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 56,233 tons; Brazil, 19,522 tons; the European Union, 12,703 tons; Malawi, 10,117 tons; Argentina, 9,992 tons; the Dominican Republic, 5,820 tons; Zimbabwe, 5,484 tons; Canada, 5,106 tons; and Indonesia, 4,507 tons.

U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 172,195 tons, valued at $675.4 million. This represents an 8 percent increase in quantity and a 32 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
