U.S. DEVELOPMENTS

Auction Reports:

Through 20 sale days of the 1996/97 U.S. flue-cured tobacco auction season, total gross sales of U.S. flue-cured tobacco (types 11-14) reached 113,660 metric tons. This represents a decrease in sales of 17 percent when compared to the same 20 day period last year when 137,677 tons were sold. Prices so far this year are averaging $3.50 per kilogram, nearly 26 cents per kilogram lower than last year. To date, over 11 percent of sales have gone under loan, compared to less than 1 percent at this point in the season last year.
