U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-MAY 1997

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-May 1997 totaled 123,169 metric tons, valued at $819.9 million. This represents a 20 percent increase in quantity and a 27 percent increase in value when compared to January-May 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 58,782 tons; Japan, 25,658 tons; Turkey, 9,223 tons; Thailand, 7,564 tons; Malaysia, 4,357 tons; Rep. of Korea, 3,049 tons; and Switzerland, 2,247 tons.

Flue-cured exports for January-May 1997 reached 59,814 metric tons, valued at $428.3 million, up 25 percent in quantity and 27 percent in value from January-May 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 25,020 tons; Japan, 14,368 tons; Turkey, 5,882 tons; Thailand, 3,194 tons; Rep. of Korea, 2,504 tons; Malaysia; 2,370 tons; and Hong Kong, 1,094 tons.

Burley exports for January-May 1997 totaled 36,775 tons, valued at $290.3 million, up 22 percent in quantity and 28 percent in value from January-May 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 18,921 tons; Japan, 5,220 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Turkey, 3,004 tons; Malaysia, 1,497 tons; Switzerland, 1,087 tons; and the Philippines, 1,038 tons.

U.S. cigarette exports in January-May 1997 totaled 89.4 billion pieces, valued at $1.79 billion, down 8 percent in quantity and 6 percent in value from January-May 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 28.1 billion pieces; the European Union, 18.3 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Cyprus, 4.9 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 4.8 billion pieces; the Russian Federation, 4.2 billion pieces; Lebanon, 4.1 billion pieces; Rep. of Korea, 3.0 billion pieces; and Singapore, 2.6 billion pieces..

U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-May 1997 totaled 24,226 metric tons, valued at $187.4 million, up 14 percent in quantity and 16 percent in value from January-May 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 12,544 metric tons; Turkey, 3,997 tons; Poland, 1,749 tons; and Japan, 1,626 tons.

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-May 1997 totaled 127,258 tons, valued at $490.7 million, up 24 percent in quantity and 65 percent in value when compared to January-May 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 59,124 tons, valued at $276.4 million in January-May 1997, up more than twice the quantity and value imported during the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 21,446 tons, valued at $83.8 million, down 3 percent in quantity and up 7 percent in value from January-May 1996. Burley imports for the first five months of 1997 totaled 16,600 tons, valued at $66.4 million, down 10 percent in quantity and up 13 percent in value from January-May 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 13,041 tons, valued at $15.6 million, down 37 percent in quantity and up 37 percent in value from the same five month period in 1996. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 54,002 tons; Brazil, 14,238 tons; the European Union, 10,111 tons; Argentina, 9,652 tons; Malawi, 8,330 tons; the Dominican Republic, 4,869 tons; Canada, 4,837 tons; Zimbabwe, 4,522 tons; and Indonesia, 3,009 tons.

U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 142,804 tons, valued at $563.5 million. This represents a 6 percent increase in quantity and a 31 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
