U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-APRIL 1997

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-April 1997 totaled 91,174 metric tons, valued at $593.5 million. This represents an 11 percent increase in quantity and value when compared to January-April 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 46,004 tons; Japan, 13,483 tons; Thailand, 7,564 tons; Turkey, 6,847 tons; Malaysia, 3,079 tons; Rep. of Korea, 3,049 tons; and Switzerland, 1,664 tons.

Flue-cured exports for January-April 1997 reached 43,772 metric tons, valued at $319.9 million. This is up 6 percent in quantity and up 9 percent in value from January-April 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 21,493 tons; Japan, 6,147 tons; Turkey, 3,960 tons; Thailand, 3,194 tons; Rep. of Korea, 2,504 tons; Malaysia; 1,930 tons; and the Philippines, 670 tons.

Burley exports for January-April 1997 totaled 25,209 tons, valued at $198.1 million. This is up 4 percent in quantity and up 10 percent in value from January-April 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 13,336 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Turkey, 2,648 tons; the Philippines, 899 tons; Malaysia, 659 tons; and Switzerland, 620 tons.

U.S. cigarette exports in January-April 1997 totaled 69.9 billion pieces, valued at $1.40 billion. This is down 8 percent in quantity and down 6 percent in value from January-April 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 22.2 billion pieces; the European Union, 13.0 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); the Russian Federation, 3.9 billion pieces; Cyprus, 3.6 billion pieces; Lebanon, 3.5 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia 3.2 billion pieces; Singapore, 2.4 billion pieces; and Rep. of Korea, 2.3 billion pieces.

U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-April 1997 totaled 18,121 tons, valued at $136.0 million. This is up 13 percent in quantity and up 15 percent in value from January-April 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 9,467 tons; Turkey, 3,074 tons; Poland, 1,432 tons; and Japan, 1,243 tons.

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-April 1997 totaled 102,561 tons, valued at $399.2 million. This is up 28 percent in quantity and up 67 percent in value when compared to January-April 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 49,013 tons, valued at $228.4 million in January-April 1997. This is 74 percent higher in quantity and 95 percent higher in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 15,702 tons, valued at $60.2 million, up 4 percent in quantity and up 19 percent in value from January-April 1996. Burley imports for the first four months of 1997 totaled 13,902 tons, valued at $56.6 million, up 10 percent in quantity and up 43 percent in value from January-April 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 10,748 tons, valued at $14.6 million, down 21 percent in quantity and up 88 percent in value from the same four month period in 1996. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 42,910 tons; Brazil, 12,970 tons; the European Union, 9,655 tons; Malawi, 6,574 tons; Canada, 4,534 tons; the Dominican Republic, 4,045 tons; Zimbabwe, 3,999 tons; Argentina, 3,977 tons; and Macedonia, 2,368 tons.

U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 105,652 tons, valued at $410.6 million. This represents a 2 percent increase in quantity and an 21 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
