U.S. DEVELOPMENTS

Auction Reports:

The 1996/97 U.S. burley and dark tobacco auction season is now closed. Total gross sales of U.S. burley tobacco (type 31) ended the year at 254,054 metric tons, up 8 percent from last year when 234,155 tons were sold. This year's marketing season lasted 45 days compared to 43 days last year. Prices for type 31 averaged $4.24 per kilogram, up 15 cents per kilogram from last year. This year no type 31 tobacco went under loan. Auction sales of Virginia fire-cured (type 21), western district fire-cured (type 23), and Virginia sun-cured (type 37) tobaccos were higher this year, while sales of eastern district fire-cured (type 22), one sucker (type 35), and greenriver (type 36) were lower. Prices this year averaged higher in all markets.
