U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-OCTOBER 1997
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-October 1997 totaled 185,445 metric tons, valued at $1.31 billion. This represents a 5 percent increase in quantity and an 18 percent increase in value when compared to January-October 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 87,486 tons; Japan, 29,362 tons; Turkey, 18,956 tons; Malaysia, 8,256, Thailand, 7,564 tons; the Republic of Korea, 7,086 tons; and the Dominican Republic, 3,603.
Flue-cured exports for January-October 1997 reached 91,006 metric tons, valued at $656.9 million, up nearly 6 percent in quantity and 9 percent in value from January-October 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 38,877 tons; Japan, 17,659; Turkey, 10,112 tons; the Republic of Korea, 6,541 tons; Malaysia, 5,075; and Thailand, 3,194 tons.
Burley exports for January-October 1997 totaled 53,452 tons, valued at $428.2 million, up 24 percent in quantity and 32 percent in value from January-October 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 27,584 tons; Turkey, 7,471 tons; Japan, 5,634 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Malaysia, 2,529 tons; the Philippines, 1,903; and Switzerland, 1,557 tons.
U.S. cigarette exports in January-October 1997 totaled 180.1 billion pieces, valued at $3.62 billion, down 12 percent in quantity and nearly 9 percent in value from January-October 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 57.4 billion pieces; the European Union, 39.3 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Cyprus, 9.02 billion pieces; Lebanon, 8.57 pieces; Russian Federation, 7.84 pieces; Saudi Arabia, 7.50 billion pieces; the Republic of Korea, 6.13 billion pieces; and Singapore, 5.22 billion pieces.
U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-October 1997 totaled 40,896 metric tons, valued at $247.9 million, up 18 percent in quantity and 19 percent in value from January-October 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 19,557 tons; Turkey, 7,544 tons; Japan, 3,147 tons; Poland, 2,862 tons; and Egypt, 2,077 tons.
U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-October 1997 totaled 255,153 tons, valued at $933,848 million, down nearly 4 percent in quantity and up 15 percent in value when compared to January-October 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 68,864 tons, valued at $317.1 million in January-October 1997, down 11 percent in quantity and 2 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 61,354 tons, valued at $263.3 million, up 13 percent in quantity and up nearly 21 percent in value from January-October 1996. Burley imports for the first nine months of 1997 totaled 53,888 tons, valued at $219.0 million, up nearly 8 percent in quantity and up 19 percent in value from January-October 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 36,197 tons, valued at $24.6 million, down nearly 23 percent in quantity and up nearly 2 percent in value from the same nine month period in 1996. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 63,011 tons; Brazil, 61,603 tons; Argentina, 23,449 tons; the European Union, 17,667 tons; Malawi, 14,651 tons; Indonesia, 10,417 tons; Greece, 10,023; and Thailand, 9,550 tons.
U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 278,918 tons, valued at $1.03 billion. This represents a nearly 2 percent decrease in quantity and nearly 14 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
