U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-JULY 1997

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-July 1997 totaled 149,444 metric tons, valued at $1.02 billion. This represents an 18 percent increase in quantity and a 30 percent increase in value when compared to January-July 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 71,828 tons; Japan, 26,072 tons; Turkey, 15,332 tons; Thailand, 7,564 tons; Malaysia, 5,953 tons; Switzerland, 3,241; and the Republic of Korea, 3,049 tons.

Flue-cured exports for January-July 1997 reached 70,530 metric tons, valued at $509.5 million, up 21 percent in quantity and 25 percent in value from January-July 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 30,915 tons; Japan, 14,368 tons; Turkey, 8,362 tons; Malaysia, 3,549 tons; Thailand, 3,194 tons; the Republic of Korea, 2,504 tons; and Hong Kong, 1,122 tons.

Burley exports for January-July 1997 totaled 46,679 tons, valued at $372.7 million, up 30 percent in quantity and 38 percent in value from January-July 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 24,226 tons; Turkey, 5,828 tons; Japan, 5,634 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Malaysia, 1,886 tons; Switzerland, 1,557 tons; and the Philippines, 1,458 tons.

U.S. cigarette exports in January-July 1997 totaled 122.1 billion pieces, valued at $2.46 billion, down 9 percent in quantity and 6 percent in value from January-July 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 40.5 billion pieces; the European Union, 24.6 billion pieces (to mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Lebanon, 6.3 billion pieces; Cyprus, 6.1 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia, 5.3 billion pieces; the Russian Federation, 5.2 billion pieces; the Republic of Korea, 4.4 billion pieces; and Singapore, 3.3 billion pieces.

U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-July 1997 totaled 31,677 metric tons, valued at $247.9 million, up 16 percent in quantity and 17 percent in value from January-July 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 15,803 metric tons; Turkey, 5,691 tons; Japan, 2,513 tons; Poland, 1,749 tons; and Egypt, 1,555 tons.

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-July 1997 totaled 173,647 tons, valued at $644.1 million, up 24 percent in quantity and 46 percent in value when compared to January-July 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 63,817 tons, valued at $293.9 million in January-July 1997, up nearly 75 percent in quantity and 89 percent in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 33,847 tons, valued at $143.7 million, down 7 percent in quantity and down 1 percent in value from January-July 1996. Burley imports for the first seven months of 1997 totaled 27,633 tons, valued at $112.1 million, up 10 percent in quantity and up 32 percent in value from January-July 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 22,493 tons, valued at $19.4 million, down 11 percent in quantity and up 51 percent in value from the same seven month period in 1996. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 57,463 tons; Brazil, 33,103 tons; the European Union, 13,693 tons; Argentina, 10,824 tons; Malawi, 10,284 tons; the Dominican Republic, 6,460 tons; Zimbabwe, 6,312 tons; Indonesia, 6,212 tons; and Canada, 5,762 tons.

U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 210,208 tons, valued at $806.5 million. This represents a 14 percent increase in quantity and a 33 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
