U.S. TRADE SUMMARY FOR JANUARY-MARCH 1997

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco exports for January-March 1997 totaled 71,552 metric tons, valued at $460.9 million. This represents an 11 percent increase in quantity and a 9 percent increase in value when compared to January-March 1996. The leading U.S. leaf export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 34,054 tons; Japan, 9,939 tons; Thailand, 7,564 tons; Turkey, 6,847 tons; Rep. of Korea, 3,049 tons; Malaysia, 2,388 tons; and the Philippines, 1,425 tons.

Flue-cured exports for January-March 1997 reached 36,316 metric tons, valued at $263.4 million. This is up 7 percent in quantity and up 11 percent in value from January-March 1996. The leading U.S. flue-cured export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 17,710 tons; Japan, 4,009 tons; Turkey, 3,960 tons; Thailand, 3,194 tons; Malaysia; 1,368 tons; and the Philippines, 623 tons.

Burley exports for January-March 1997 totaled 18,293 tons, valued at $141.0 million. This is down 1 percent in quantity and up 4 percent in value from January-March 1996. The leading U.S. burley export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 8,806 tons; Thailand, 4,323 tons; Turkey, 2,648 tons; the Philippines, 802 tons; Malaysia, 531 tons; and Canada, 355 tons.

U.S. cigarette exports in January-March 1997 totaled 55.4 billion pieces, valued at $1.11 billion. This is down 4 percent in quantity and down 1 percent in value from January-March 1996. The leading U.S. cigarette export markets so far in 1997 are: Japan, 17.8 billion pieces; the European Union, 10.7 billion pieces (mainly Belgium/Luxembourg which is a major transshipment point for exports to other European markets); Cyprus, 3.4 billion pieces; the Russian Federation, 2.9 billion pieces; Lebanon, 2.6 billion pieces; Saudi Arabia 2.4 billion pieces; Singapore, 2.1 billion pieces; and South Korea, 1.6 billion pieces.

U.S. exports of bulk smoking tobacco for January-March 1997 totaled 13,942 tons, valued at $107.3 million. This is up 16 percent in quantity and up 19 percent in value from January-March 1996. The leading export markets so far in 1997 are: the European Union, 6,823 tons; Turkey, 2,194 tons; Poland, 1,260 tons; and Japan, 952 tons.

U.S. unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption (duty paid) for January-March 1997 totaled 80,248 tons, valued at $320.7 million. This is up 44 percent in quantity and up 78 percent in value when compared to January-March 1996. Imports of oriental tobacco, the leading tobacco type imported by the United States, reached 41,857 tons, valued at $195.5 million in January-March 1997. This 101 percent higher in quantity and 119 percent higher in value when compared to the same period in 1996. Flue-cured imports so far in 1997 totaled 11,505 tons, valued at $46.7 million, up 7 percent in quantity and up 29 percent in value from January-March 1996. Burley imports for the first three months of 1997 totaled 9,666 tons, valued at $38.5 million, up 5 percent in quantity and up 21 percent in value from January-March 1996. U.S. imports of stems and scrap tobacco so far in 1997 total 7,791 tons, valued at $13.1 million, up 14 percent in quantity and up 157 percent in value from the same three month period in 1996. So far in 1997, the leading suppliers to the U.S. of unmanufactured tobacco imports for consumption are: Turkey, 34,692 tons; the European Union, 18,982 tons; Brazil, 9,683 tons; Malawi, 3,983 tons; Canada, 3,199 tons; Zimbabwe, 2,977 tons; the Dominican Republic, 2,592 tons; Argentina, 2,548 tons; and Macedonia, 1,918 tons.

U.S. general imports (actual arrivals) of unmanufactured tobacco so far in 1997 totaled 75,513 tons, valued at $302.2 million. This represents a 1 percent increase in quantity and an 19 percent increase in value from the same period in 1996.
